The Department of Justice’s decision to challenge dairy food giant Dean Food’s
purchase of another milk producer because the combined company would have a
monopoly in some markets was being cheered Friday by Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y.
Schumer has been a vocal critic of what he has called increased concentration in
the dairy industry a trend he says has hurt producers in New York state.
Schumer has called for an investigation into possible anti-competitive practices
among the nation’s largest dairy processors that he believes are suppressing the
price farmers can command on the market, even though the price of milk on store
shelves has remained stable.
