CARLINVILLE, Ill. – In celebration of National Dairy Month, and to coincide with World Milk Day, Prairie Farms released a video today of their farm families toasting dairy farmers across the globe. National Dairy Month started out as National Milk Month in 1937 as a way to promote drinking milk. It was initially created to stabilize the dairy demand when production was at a surplus, but has now developed into an annual tradition that celebrates the contributions the dairy industry has made to the world. World Milk Day is a day established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to recognize the importance of milk as a global food. It has been observed on June 1 each year since 2001. The day is intended to provide an opportunity to bring attention to activities that are connected with the dairy sector.
“Throughout National Dairy Month, we’ll be reminding consumers that dairy farming is the original farm to table movement. Being a dairy farmer means working 365 days a year, and we are very proud of our farmer-owners for their commitment to providing milk and dairy products to millions of families each day – from farm to table in less than 48 hours,” said Rebecca Leinenbach, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Prairie Farms. “The celebration will continue throughout June, and later this month we will help support food banks in the communities where our farm families and employees work and live by donating over 14,500 gallons of milk – that’s 232,000 servings of milk. We hope this donation will help raise awareness in the fight against hunger.”
Consumers can give back as well just by voting for the Our Caps Your Cause food bank or pantry of choice in the Get Real Give Back Sweepstakes. The Top 10 Food Banks and Pantries each week will receive a bonus cap donation valued at $50! The Get Real Give Back Sweepstakes will award weekly dairy-filled prize packages, all to commemorate National Dairy Month. The hub for all campaign activities can be found at prairiefarms.com/dairymonth which includes new summer-themed recipes, coupons, contest entry form and more.
A variety of events are planned during June, including a celebration at the Saint Louis Science Center GROW exhibit on Saturday, June 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Activities include butter churning, food tasting, scavenger hunt, and the opportunity to meet Fanny, a Prairie Farms’ dairy cow.
