MADISON, Wis. The organic food industry has undergone tremendous growth
since the late 1990s, from $3.6 billion in retail sales in 1997 to $21.1 billion
in 2008, according to a report recently released by USDAs Economic Research

Marketing U.S. Organic Foods: Recent Trends From Farms to Consumers, an report
by Carolyn Dimitri, ERS, and Lydia Oberholtzer, Pennsylvania State University,
analyzes the most recent data available to examine each level of the organic
supply chain, from farms to retailers to consumers.
As a result of the last decades organic marketing boom, the authors say,
organic foods now occupy prominent shelf space in dairy and produce aisles of
most mainstream U.S. food retailers. In addition, many of these stores have
introduced lines of organic private label products and manufacturers continue to
introduce a number of new organic products.
