WASHINGTON — American Bakers Association member facilities represent 41 of the 100 manufacturing plants recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR certification for their superior energy performance in 2018. Only plants in the top 25 percent of energy performance nationwide can earn the ENERGY STAR.
“Our members’ customers – both retail and the end consumer – have expectations regarding the environmental stewardship of companies receiving their support,” said Rasma Zvaners, Vice President of Regulatory and Technical Services. “The ENERGY STAR program is an important component to show our industry cares deeply about sustainability initiatives.”
The 41 ABA-Member baking facilities, along with the 59 other plants representing 19 different types of manufacturing, reduced their energy bills by more than $400 million, saved more than 70 trillion British thermal units (TBtu) of energy, and achieved broad emissions reductions, including 4.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The energy savings are enough to meet the annual energy needs of nearly 440,000 American households.
ENERGY STAR Certified Baking Plants
A total of 32 Commercial Bread/Rolls facilities were awarded the ENERGY STAR in 2018, up from 24 in the previous year.
Ten bakeries for Cookies and Crackers were awarded the ENERGY STAR in 2018, up from 7 in 2017.

ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry
180 baselines registered for the ENERGY STAR Challenge with 23 Commercial Bread Rolls Bakeries achieving the challenge reduction goal, voluntarily reducing their energy intensity by 10% in 5 years or less.
