The Stroehmann Bakery plant on Paxton Street – where workers have been making bread since at least 1981 – is closing.
Unionized employees were told of the plan to shutter the plant, effective Sept. 19, at a brief meeting Tuesday morning. Stroehmann was purchased (along with other brands) by Bimbo Bakeries USA in 2009.
According to the company, roughly 90 people will lose their jobs as a result of the plant closure. Earlier this year the company shut down the factory's breadline, cutting 60-plus jobs at the time.
