Aldi, an international supermarket chain known for smaller stores, smaller selections of merchandise, and private-label brands sold at big discounts, is continuing its expansion in North Jersey, and making some changes that could broaden its appeal to more affluent shoppers.

The company, which was born in Germany in 1913 and now has over 9,000 stores, including more than 1,200 in this country, is preparing to open its second Bergen County store next month, in Lodi.

The store, on Essex Street, just off Route 17, will be the 29th Aldi in New Jersey. Aldi expects to add six to eight stores per year in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.

The growth of this small-format discount grocer is something New Jersey's big supermarket players need to pay attention to.
