GULF COUNTY, Fla. – In the past several years, unhealthy scallops, red tide, and other harmful algae blooms have caused scallop season in Gulf County and the St. Joe Bay to close or be cut short.
This year, the area finally opened for a full season, in fact, it's listed as the longest season in the state.
"One year we had red tide, which closed the season completely, and then we've had some really shortened seasons, for just a two week period, so this year it's ran from August 17th to September 30th, this coming weekend," Gulf County Tourist Development Council Executive Director Kelli Godwin said.
