Cameo Takes First Place For Late Season Crunch In Recent Study

WENATCHEE, Wa. – Cameo® apples were ranked the crunchiest apple by consumers in late season apple taste study recently released by the Cameo® Apple Marketing Association (CAMA).
CAMA worked with the Washington State University Food Science program to document the taste and crunch attributes of popular varieties in the late season. The study, conducted in June of 2010, used random samples of domestic apple varieties common on the retail shelf from March through July.
The results showed that the Cameo® apple is preferred significantly more by consumers, as compared to the other tested varieties, for being crunchy and having a thin skin. Significant differences between the tested varieties were observed for overall consumer acceptance, and the specific sensory attributes of crispness, firmness, skin thickness, sourness, apple flavor intensity and overall eating experience.
“This independent study documented that Cameo® has a distinct advantage to offer in late season to the consumer.” Precht continued, “Retailers all over the country are seeing the sales lift of having this variety to offer to shoppers beginning in March and running through the late season.”
“Cameo® growers have worked hard to grow, harvest, and store this variety to deliver the best possible taste and crunch in the mid and late season” said Kevin Precht, CAMA Director of Marketing. “We have positioned Cameo® as ‘the King of the Late Season’, with marketing programs geared around helping retailers leverage Cameo’s eating qualities to drive sales during that time of year.”
