A Pittsburgh-region sausage maker has landed its first deal with a Wal-Mart Stores Inc. distribution center, enabling it to expand into two new states and opens the door to more such agreements which could fast-track acquisition plans.
Uncle Charley’s Sausage Co. on Thursday confirmed its fresh sausage will be provided to 40 Walmart stores in Maryland and Virginia via the new arrangement with the company’s distribution center in Bedford, Pa. Walmarts aren’t new territory for the Vandergrift-based company, but utilizing a distribution center is, said President and CEO Len Caric.
“The way this works, we deliver directly to a lot of Walmart stores, but we’ve asked the company to go into the distribution centers in Wintersville, Ohio, and Bedford,” Caric said. “Those two warehouses cover the Walmart stores in western Pennsylvania. When we met with Wal-Mart, they said, ‘We’ll consider it and keep doing what you’re doing.’ We asked if they minded if we asked the stores directly, and they said, ‘Please do.’”
