The Lone Star State joins six other states that have instituted bans.

An unexpected ban was caught up in a slew of bills this legislative session—the sale of lab-grown meat in Texas.

A bill signed into law by Greg. Gov Abbott on Friday prohibits the sale of “cell-cultured protein,” effectively halting any future market for lab-grown meat in the state. Scientists create lab-grown meat by harvesting cells from living animals and growing them in a controlled environment to create meat. Sometimes called “no-kill” meat, the lab-grown meat uses cells to create meat without slaughtering animals.

Texas joins six other states that have instituted bans on the sale of lab-grown meat. Senate Bill 261 will be in effect until September 2027.
