A Co-Op Grocery on the Wasatch Front is Closer to Reality

The opening of the Wasatch Food Co-op brings together a long-cherished vision of a member-owned store and a centralized hub known as the Milk Block. After 16 years of effort, the co-op is close to realizing this dream but requires approximately $2 million to move forward. According to board chair Stephanie Buranek, it is just a matter of time before the co-op becomes a vital part of the community surrounding Salt Lake City's 900 South.
The opening will bring together two decade-plus dreams: the creation of a member-owned store and the development of a “centralized hub” called the Milk Block.
The people who have been working for the past 16 years to open a customer-owned grocery on the Wasatch Front are closer to seeing their dream finally happen.
All they need now, said the head of the Wasatch Food Co-op, is around $2 million. “It’s just a matter of time,” said Stephanie Buranek, the co-op’s board chair.
The Wasatch Food Co-op is set to be the anchor tenant in the Milk Block, which extends from 402 East to 430 East — and a fixture of the neighborhood around it on Salt Lake City’s 900 South.
