Cynthia Druckenbrod wore roses on her wrist to her high school prom.
Calla-lilies dressed her 2004 wedding. But now the Druckenbrods’ home greenhouse
has 500 lush orchid plants.

The colors — gorgeous. But the fragrance? “It’s intoxicating,” said Druckenbrod,
horticulture director of Cleveland Botanical Garden. “That’s the real charm and
allure of orchids for me.”

Visitors to the botanical garden’s 2010 Orchid Mania: Prepare to be scent-drunk
times 1,500. That’s the number of live orchid plants of a few hundred varieties
to be displayed in bloom throughout the garden’s lobby, the adjoining Eppig
Gallery and the Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse. Orchid Mania, the garden’s
signature event, starts Saturday, Feb. 27, and runs through Sunday, March 28. (A
$50 champagne reception and preview on Friday, Feb. 26, will toast the opening.)
