A cut in funding for the U.S. meat and poultry inspections contained in the Obama administration's 2015 budget proposal does not mean less attention to food safety, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said on Tuesday.
"The bottom line is – we are not compromising safety here," Vilsack said on a conference call with reporters following the release of the White House's budget proposals.
The proposed budget of USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), whose primary role is to ensure the safety of meat, poultry and egg products produced in the United States, was trimmed by some $9.3 million for fiscal 2015 from the enacted level of 2014, to just over $1 billion.
