A Taste of Bagel History
The origins of the bagel are debated, but most historians agree that this chewy circular bread debuted in Krakow, Poland in 1610. And lovers of bagel with a schmear had to wait to enjoy the pairing until 1872, when cream cheese was invented. Prepackaged bagels became available in the 1950s, helping them grow in mainstream popularity, and Thomas' started baking bagels in 1991.

Fun Bagel Facts

  •     Other German variations of the word bagel are 'beigel,' meaning 'ring,' and 'bugel' meaning bracelet.
  •     What's up with the hole in the middle? Bakers would thread bagels onto dowels to sell them more easily on the streets.
  •     Bagels are the only bread that are boiled before they are baked.
