Madison, WI – Point Reyes Original Blue Cheese won 2nd Place, Blue Vein Cheese in the 2016 World Championship Cheese Contest held this week in Madison, WI. The international contest began Monday with the judging of over 2500 entries in cheese, butter and yogurt classes from 23 countries and 31 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. Original Blue, the company’s raw milk, classic-style blue known for its ultra-creamy texture and full-flavored, peppery finish, was one of 41 entries for Blue Vein Cheese and scored an impressive 98.90 by an international panel of cheese grading experts.
“We are thrilled with how well Original Blue scored in this very prestigious, tight competition,” said Lynn Giacomini Stray, co-owner of Point Reyes Farmstead. “Our line of distinct, farmstead cheeses all scored very well this year… but knowing that Original Blue, our flagship product, was awarded a 2nd Place, –that makes us especially proud. Over the last 16 years Original Blue has become an iconic cheese in retail cases, on chef menus and most-importantly, on cheese boards at home. This award validates Original Blue’s success, reminding us that recognized industry experts appreciate it as much as our blue cheese-loving customers.”
Known for award-winning, hand-crafted artisan cheese since 2000, Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company’s product line also includes Toma, a buttery flavored, semi-hard table cheese, Bay Blue, a dense, fudgey-textured, mellow blue with a salted-caramel finish and Fresh Mozzarella, made in the traditional Italian style. New this Spring, the company is introducing California Coastal Blue, its version of a pasteurized classic-style blue cheese. The Point Reyes Farmstead product line is available nationally at independent cheese shops and specialty chains as well as at www.pointreyescheese.com .
