Prices for cuts of alligator meat — from ribs to tail — have doubled over the past three years, the result of a long-term effort to market the meat as a healthy alternative to chicken and pork, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The report says wild and farm-raised alligator meat is fetching between $12 to $15 per pound wholesale, up from $6 to $7 per pound in 2012.

In addition to marketing efforts, reality TV shows, including the Louisiana-shot "Swamp People" on the History channel, have helped generate interest, the report says.
