Strawberry Breeding Program Introduces New Variety 'Florida 127'

PLANT CITY – Growers have not yet picked the last strawberry from the 2014-15 crop, and already they are planning for the future.
The strawberry breeding program based at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Wimauma released at the beginning of the season a promising new variety still known by the geeky name, "Florida 127." It was planted on about 150 acres in October, said Kenneth Parker, executive director of the Florida Strawberry Growers Association.
"In listening to our consumers, they want a berry with great flavor and great shelf life," Parker said.
