A portion of the South River has been closed to shellfish harvesting after state inspectors found the water contained high levels of bacteria.

The Maryland Department of the Environment on Monday reclassified about 172 acres of waterway stretching between Almshouse Creek and Crab Creek from approved for harvesting to "restricted," which means no shellfish can be harvested from that area.

The decision follows recent tests that revealed "unacceptable" bacteria levels in parts of the river, according to a press release from the state agency. No cause for the finding has been identified, officials said.
