Kroger said it will invest $60 million into a new distribution center that will service the eastern half of the country once it opens later this year.

The Downtown Cincinnati-based supermarket giant has inked a deal to buy a newly constructed 674,000-square-foot facility located on Mount Zion Road in Florence in Boone County. The purchase price was not disclosed for the center, which must be further developed and equipped. The new facility will employ 100 new workers.

The company said the new facility, which was purchased from VanTrust Real Estate, will primarily be used as a replenishment center, supporting smaller regional Kroger distribution centers with non-refrigerated goods. Kroger supermarkets in 35 states are shopped by more than 8.5 million customers every day.
