APHIS Seeks Comment on Draft Pest Risk Assessment for the Importation of Ornamental Cherry Cuttings from Japan

APHIS has drafted a pest risk assessment for the importation of ornamental cherry cuttings (Prunus spp. pseudocerasus) for use as a cut flower from Japan. The assessment describes potential pests associated with the commodity.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Confirmed Near New Jersey Border

 The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) have confirmed a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) case in a non-commercial backyard poultry flock in Northampton County in Pennsylvania, near its eastern border that will affect Warren County in New Jersey due to the control area radius. The disease response is being coordinated between the New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA), the PDA, and federal partners.

New USDA Database Will Replace Three Import Manuals and the Fruit and Vegetable Imports Requirement (FAVIR) Database

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has developed a new database called “Agricultural Commodity Import Requirements” (ACIR). ACIR gives users a simple search interface for finding and displaying import requirements for agricultural commodities. It will become the official location for import requirements for commodities currently found in the Fruit and Vegetable Import Requirements (FAVIR) database and three import manuals:

APHIS Amends Entry Requirements for Importation of Potato from Prince Edward Island to Prevent Introduction of Potato Wart Pathogen

Effective immediately, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is amending its requirements for the importation of potato (Solanum tuberosum) from Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada to prevent the introduction of potato wart (causal agent Synchytrium endobioticum) into the United States.
