Recreational Fishing Season for Red Grouper to Close July 1

Officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced that the recreational fishing season for Red Grouper (Epinephelus morio) will close in Mississippi territorial waters on Monday, July 1, 2024, at 12:01 a.m. local time.

Mississippi students, seafood industry members and restaurant employees are encouraged to attend. Space is limited to the first 25 registrants per class. The cost is free for Mississippi residents and $160 for out-of-state residents. Refreshments are provided. All participants receive an Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) certificate upon completion.

Mississippi Shrimp Season Opens Wednesday, May 29

Recreational and commercial shrimp season north of the Intracoastal Waterway will close at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2025. For areas south of the Intracoastal Waterway and west of the Gulfport Ship Channel, shrimp season will close at 12:01 a.m. on May 1, 2025. Licensed live-bait shrimping is open year-round in designated areas.

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) is Accepting Proposals for GOMESA Project

Proposals, which are restricted to projects within Hancock, Harrison and Jackson Counties, must meet one or more of the following criteria: projects and activities for the purposes of coastal protection, including conservation, coastal restoration, hurricane protection and infrastructure directly affected by coastal wetland losses; mitigation of damage to fish, wildlife or natural resources; implementation of a federally-approved marine, coastal or comprehensive conservation management plan; mitigation of the impact of Outer Continental Shelf activities through the funding of onshore infrastructure projects; and planning assistance and the administrative costs of compliance.
