Potato Sales at Retail See a 9% Increase in Volume Since July 2019

Retail potato sales soar, increasing 10.4% in dollar sales and 9.3% in volume sales between July 1, 2019 and May 19, 2020, according to IRI. All potato categories across the retail store, except deli-prepared sides, increased in dollar and volume sales.

Utilization of U.S. grown potatoes increased by 3.3% in volume in 2019 compared to 2018, an increase of 1,183 million pounds. This growth was driven by an 8.8% increase in exports, a 1.2% growth in foodservice sales, a 0.7% increase in retail sales, and a 3.4% decline in imports.

Fresh potato sales increased in dollar sales by 2.0%. Volume sales for fresh potatoes were nearly flat but declined by 0.3% during the first quarter. Red potatoes were the main driver in the decline in fresh potato sales volume. Deli-prepared sides declined in both dollar sales by 1.0% and volume sales by 1.9%.

Dollars Up While Volume Varies During Holiday Season

The value of total store potato sales increased by 1.5% during the second quarter of the marketing year compared to previous marketing year. Quarter two ran from October through December 2018 and included all holiday sales prior to the new year. Volume declined by -1.8% across all categories.
