2025 Perennial Plant of the Year Announced

Pycnanthemum muticum, voted the 2025 PPOY by PPA members, is known as clustered mountainmint, blunt mountainmint, or short-toothed mountainmint and is native to meadows and open woodlands across much of the eastern United States west to Texas. It is not a true mint (Mentha spp.) but belongs to the same family and has similarly scented leaves.

2024 Perennial Plant of the Year Announced

The Perennial Plant Association is pleased to announce the 2024 Perennial Plant of the Year®, Phlox paniculata ‘Jeana’.  Phlox paniculata ‘Jeana’ is an exceptional garden phlox reaching five feet tall and four feet wide, although size will geographically vary.  It is known for its impressive flowers, held on tall and sturdy stems from midsummer to early fall. 

2023 Perennial Plant of the Year Announced

The Perennial Plant Association is pleased to promote Rudbeckia ‘American Gold Rush’ as the 2023 Perennial Plant of the Year®.  ‘American Gold Rush’ is a stunning addition to any garden.  At the height of summer, it turns up the volume for a long season of dazzling color right up to autumnal frosts. The bright golden-yellow flowers feature arching rays and a reddish halo surrounding dark chocolate cones. Three-inch flowers blanket the compact plant, which is only 22-27 inches tall with a broader width to 40 inches if given room to grow.

Like a cloud of confetti, tiny white flowers (sometimes touched with pale blue) appear from early summer to fall. Undemanding and dependable, calamint provides the perfect foil for other summer bloomers and foliage. This full-sun perennial has a low mounding or bushy habit, ideal for the front of the border, rock gardens, and more.
