FDA Advises Restaurants/Retailers Not to Serve/Sell and Consumers Not to Eat Certain Cultured Mussels from East River Shellfish, Inc. Potentially Contaminated with Salmonella/E. coli

The FDA is advising consumers not to eat, and restaurants and food retailers not to sell, and to dispose of cultured mussels from East River Shellfish, Inc. from harvest location PE 4-C, harvested on 8/14/2023, and shipped on 8/15/2023 to retailers in IL, MA, and NY due to the possible presence of Salmonella and E. coli.

FDA Signs Partnership with Ecuador to Enhance Safety of Shrimp Imports

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) signed a Regulatory Partnership Arrangement (RPA) with Ecuador’s seafood regulatory authority to strengthen food safety in shrimp intended for the U.S. market. Shrimp is the most consumed seafood in the United States, the vast majority of which is imported. Ecuador is one of the leading exporters of aquacultured shrimp to the United States.  

FDA Completes Final Administrative Actions on Partially Hydrogenated Oils in Foods

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is issuing a direct final rule to complete administrative actions that reflect the agency’s June 2015 final determination that the use of partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) in foods is no longer Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). 

IDFA Comments on the FDA’s Draft Guidance on the ‘Labeling of Plant-Based Milk Alternatives and Voluntary Nutrient Statements

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) submitted comments to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in support of the agency’s position that consumers need additional clarity on the labels of plant-based “milk” alternatives, such as “soy milk” and “almond milk,” to more easily discern when these beverages are nutritionally different from milk.

Cooperstown Cheese Company Recalls Products Because of Possible Health Risk

Cooperstown Cheese Company of Milford, NY, is recalling 1400 pounds of cheese purchased, sold or distributed from June 21, 2023 to July 10, 2023 because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
