AquaBounty Announces a Pause to Ohio Farm Construction While It Evaluates Scope Alternatives and a Possible Phased Approach

AquaBounty Technologies, a land-based aquaculture company utilizing technology to enhance operational performance and sustainability, announced today that the Company will pause the construction of its farm in Pioneer, Ohio due to a substantial increase in its estimated cost of completion. The Company will now take the required time to evaluate the timing and cost of size and scope alternatives, including a phased approach to complete the project.   

AquaBounty Will No Longer Produce Genetically Modified Salmon in Canada

The only factory that produced genetically modified salmon in Canada will no longer produce them. The company’s AquaBounty plant in Prince Edward Island is now turning its attention to the production of salmon eggs – which will then grow in the United States – but that does not mean that we will no longer find of genetically modified salmon on the shelves of Canadian grocery stores.

“We have made solid progress towards finalizing site engineering designs and permitting since our site announcement in July,” said Sylvia Wulf, Chief Executive Officer of AquaBounty. “With hydrology studies complete, confirming that the quantity and quality of water available meets our needs as well as the needs of the local community, key water and environmental permits are currently underway. We remain on track with our preliminary timing estimates to commence construction by year-end, with commercial stocking of salmon estimated to occur in 2023.
