“I’m bringing in twice as many blue crabs this year than I did last year,” said Capt. Steve Pham. “But, it is still less than six or seven years ago.”
Pham can be found most mornings on the local bays shrimping. He brings in whatever blue crabs are in his nets with the shrimp to Capt’s Bait Shack on Conn Brown Harbor.
Mary Ann Heimann at South Bay Marina buys the blue crabs she sells from crabbers who catch theirs in crab traps in the bays. She said last year was the first year for a while she had no shortage for her customers.
Blue crabs are a favorite food for redfish and black drum, as the cooler weather arrives, so they are a desired bait by the fishermen. The crabs are also a staple in the diet of the whooping crane as well as other shore birds.
