Seattle, WA – Just in time to haul the first fresh Alaska salmon out of Cordova this season, Trident Seafoods is introducing a new, no-wax “wetlock” fiber box that meets specifications for airline shipment and is fully recyclable. Decidedly more attractive and just as waterproof as the wax-impregnated box it replaces, the new, two-piece AquaSafe® container was created by engineers at International Paper and is ideally suited for shipping fresh salmon out of Alaska by air. Packed with fresh salmon and gel ice, they’re sealed with strapping tape and trucked immediately to the airport. They can also be wet-iced, containerized and shipped by barge or truck.
Once the fish reach their destination, customers are encouraged to recycle the packaging with other corrugated and cardboard boxes rather than throw them away or incinerate them as is frequently done with waxed cartons. A prominent panel on Trident’s new box reads: “DON’T BOOT OUR NEW BOX! – Recycle It!” and reminds end-users that the box is made from 100% renewable and recyclable fiber.

It has just as much to do with using those fish wisely after they’re harvested. We’re working very hard to fully utilize every fish we purchase from fishermen or catch ourselves by developing new products like fish oil, fishmeal, and even pet treats. This new, recyclable wetlock box is another step toward full utilization of our products, and we’re happy to continue marching in the right direction because it makes good sense to everybody.”
