PENOBSCOT – Oyster lovers often serve the succulent bivalves with a tangy mignonette sauce, but a plan to raise oysters in Northern Bay may have some shorefront landowners looking for lemons instead.
The Taunton Bay Oyster Co. has filed an application with the Department of Marine Resources for a 10-year aquaculture lease to grow up to 4 million oysters on three sites totaling 23.7 acres in Northern Bay on the Bagaduce River. The company already raises about the same number on five lease sites spread over some 27.84 acres in Taunton Bay.
About 40 people were on hand when DMR and company owner Michael Briggs hosted an informal pre-application scoping session at the Penobscot School in March to describe the plan. Their response to the proposal was almost universally negative.
