WASHINGTON — Arkansas catfish producers are backing a new federal regulation that would require more stringent safety inspections for domestic and foreign catfish.
The proposed regulation, which was published Thursday in the Federal Register, would put USDA in charge of inspecting and regulating commercial catfish productions.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Services said the regulation is intended to ensure that catfish products sold in fish markets and grocery stores are "wholesome, not adulterated, and properly marked, labeled and packaged."
It would apply to both domestic and foreign producers — a requirement that has the backing of Catfish Farmers of Arkansas.
