Seafood fraud in Florida, say it isn't so.
South and Central Florida both depend on their reputation as hot spots for mouth-watering seafood. Anything that undermines that reputation is intolerable.
Unfortunately, there have been serious seafood fraud problems in our local past. When the Sun Sentinel had genetic tests performed on random fish samples from retail markets in the late 1980s, it found mislabeling occurred nine out of 10 times.
"Seafood fraud has been a rampant problem in the past in South Florida and the state," said Michael Hirschfield, a senior vice president for North America and Chief Scientist, for Oceana, a national conservation group. "We don't know what the current situation is, but we will see."
