A report on a study of the recovery of the Chilean salmon-farming industry from the infectious salmon anemia crisis has been added to the program for GOAL 2011, an annual meeting for aquaculture and seafood industry leaders organized by the Global Aquaculture Alliance.
With assistance from Chile’s Undersecretariat for Fisheries and Aquaculture and SalmonChile, an international team of experts is extracting the principal elements that led to the disease problem as well as those that contributed to their solution so that emerging aquaculture countries can prevent and/or mitigate similar environmental/sanitary impacts.
The study will be supported by the Chilean government through the undersecretariat and Corporation for Production Development, and is being considered as a World Bank project.
GOAL 2011
GOAL 2011 will be held November 6-9 in Santiago, Chile. It will combine focused information on international aquaculture production and marketing with opportunities to discuss industry issues and network with hundreds of seafood leaders from around the world.
Registrations for GOAL 2011 are coming in from various several geographic regions. To date, five countries are represented on the attendee list. GOAL registration information and forms are available online in English at www.gaalliance.org/GOAL2011/ and in Spanish at www.gaalliance.org/GOAL2011/espanol.php.
Preliminary Program
During the mornings, themed sessions will be presented at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Santiago, the center of GOAL 2011 activities. During the afternoons, special interest sessions will include lunches on Monday and Tuesday, technical committee meetings for GAA’s Best Aquaculture Practices certification program, special presentations by sponsors, facilitated business meetings and socializing.
Consistent with the 2011 conference theme, “Double In A Decade — Responsibly,” this year’s expert speakers will address ways the aquaculture sector can begin to quickly ramp up output in a sustainable way. On the first day, presenters will summarize global aquaculture statistics and review innovative technologies related to increased production.
The second day will include a special session on global aquaculture investments with a keynote by Gorjan Nikolik of Rabobank. Chile’s recovery from infectious salmon anemia and discussions on feed and energy costs, and antibiotic testing will also be featured. The final day’s sessions will examine retail, foodservice and quick-serve markets with an emphasis on salmon.
