HOUMA — Two-thousand coastal residents will begin receiving letters this week inviting them to participate in a oil-spill-worker health study, the largest ever conducted, officials said.
The goal, said principal investigator Dale Sandler, “is to help us learn if oil spills and exposure to crude oil and dispersants affect physical and mental health.”
Only eight similar studies have been conducted over the past five decades, she said.
This review, conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, will focus on spill workers’ exposure to chemicals, track illnesses and examine both lifestyle and seafood-consumption habits.
