Northwest Oyster Harvest Resumes; China Remains Closed

Commercial oyster harvesting can resume Saturday in all areas of Hood Canal and Puget Sound, officials said, now that the risk of bacteria-caused illness has declined due to cooler weather.

But at least one effect remains from a recent recall of Hood Canal oysters.

China has closed its borders to Washington state shellfish, according to a spokesman from Shelton-based Taylor Shellfish Farms, the nation’s leading producer of farmed oysters, mussels and clams, which sells up to $1 million a year to China.

“We have stuff tied up in China, even though we had nothing to do with the recall,” said Taylor Shellfish’s Bill Dewey.
