The Select Board voted unanimously Wednesday to extend the Nantucket’s commercial bay scallop season until April 14 at the request of local fishermen.
The move came in response to severe weather over the winter that saw the fishery closed for multiple days following freezing temperatures and a mandatory prohibition on all shellfishing after a catastrophic sewer-main break in January.
The regular closing date is March 31.
The extension may still need approval from the state Department of Fisheries & Wildlife, but island fisherman Neil Cocker has been working with state Rep. Dylan Fernandes to expedite the process.
