Blue claw crabs have been popping up in the Long Island Sound in numbers never before seen, causing area fishermen to flock to the bulkheads.
“I've been in the fishing industry 45 years; I have never seen the likes of it,” said Stan Hentschel, owner of Rocky Point Fishing Stop. “There's an inordinate influx of blue claw crabs.”
The crabs' meat is used most often in crab cakes and tomato sauces, making them a particularly desirable crustacean locally.
Keith Corey, manager of Ralphs Fishing Station in Mount Sinai, has been crabbing regularly and has been fishing since he was a kid. He estimates the Sound has seen a 30 percent increase in blue claw crabs over last year.
