Lobster fishermen along Nova Scotia's Northumberland Strait will begin fishing Monday, more than 10 days after they would normally have set their first traps.

The delayed opening of the season has meant lost earnings for fishermen, and for residents of Arisaig, it also means the loss of a popular community dinner.

The annual Mother’s Day lobster dinner was cancelled Sunday for the first time in 30 years.

“I just came from Mass a few minutes ago and a lot of them said they just feel lost,” said organizer Mary MacLellan. “And I know myself, I feel as if I’m doing nothing. Normally I’d be doing six or a dozen things at once. It’s a busy, busy time.”
