BILOXI, Miss. — If seafood samples test clear of oil contamination, state waters could reopen for recreational and commercial fishermen to keep their catch as soon as two weeks, said William Walker, executive director of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources.
"We are going to do it as quickly as possible," Walker said during at a meeting of the state Commission on Marine Resources on Tuesday.
Seafood tissues samples have been sent the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pascagoula laboratory for testing. A second set of samples, which includes shell and finfish, will be tested.
If the samples are uncontaminated and there is no oil in the state's waters, the fishing season would resume, Walker said.
