Federal Grants To Help Get First Delaware Shellfish Industry Off The Ground

The University of Delaware has been awarded two federal grants totaling $192,000 to study the economic potential of oyster farming in Delaware’s Inland Bays.
The U.S. Department of Commerce will fund research into how consumers will value the ecosystem services the oysters provide. The USDA Rural Development grant will help forge a branding strategy for shellfish farmers to market their aquaculture products.
Chris Bason, the executive director of the Delaware Center for Inland Bays, says that should give the state’s shellfish industry a boost as it gets off the ground.
