The first global guidelines for aquaculture certification were adopted by the Sub-committee on Aquaculture and will be presented to the Committee on Fisheries in 2011 for approval, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said.
The guidelines are related to animal health, food safety, the environment and socio-economic issues relating to aquaculture workers.
Aquaculture or aquafarming involves the farming of aquatic organisms like fish, plants or mollusks, which are cultivated in freshwater or saltwater under controlled conditions. It is the fastest growing food production sector in the world, as natural food resources grow scarce or difficult to obtain.
Currently, about half the seafood harvested for consumption comes from aquaculture and the rest from commercial fishing.
