Gig Harbor, WA – The Kurt Grinnell Indigenous Aquaculture Scholarship — formerly known as the Kurt Grinnell Aquaculture Scholarship Foundation — has announced the appointment of Elizabeth Barlow to its 10-member Board of Directors.
Barlow, the Managing Director of Cermaq Newfoundland Ltd., a subsidiary of Cermaq, brings to the Board more than 30 years of experience building partnerships between industry, government, and First Nation communities across Newfoundland and Labrador. “It is an honor for me to join the KGIAS Board and contribute my experience to those future leaders who seek to incorporate aquaculture to their respective communities,” Barlow said.
Barlow served for almost two years as Oceans Management Coordinator for MAMKA – Miawpukek First Nation, advising on marine and aquatic science, salmon enhancement, and aquaculture management. Throughout her career, she has worked to engage First Nation communities in sustainable aquaculture — experience that closely aligns with the Foundation’s mission of advancing Indigenous participation in aquaculture.
Jaiden Grinnell Bosick, KGIAS Board President and daughter of the late Kurt Grinnell, said, “We are honored to welcome Elizabeth Barlow to our Board. Her decades of experience bridging industry, government, and First Nation communities make her a tremendous asset as we continue our mission of supporting Indigenous students pursuing careers in aquaculture, natural resources, and fisheries.”
Since its founding in 2022, the foundation has awarded 19 scholarships totaling $120,000 to Tribal and First Nation students in the United States and Canada and has issued several travel awards to Indigenous to attend the Pacific Northwest Indigenous Aquaculture Summit.
