Daily Catch Seafood Company Opens In Vancouver

The Daily Catch Seafood Company opened this month, offering delicious, environmentally-conscious seafood on The Drive.

Founded and run by Dylan McColloch and Ryan Johnson, the Daily Catch's concept arose from nostalgia of their upbringing on the Sunshine Coast. There, seafood was both good and easy to come by – qualities which they thought were lacking in Vancouver. Thus began a year of planning, including the ten month trial of finding a location. As it turned out, many businesses had an objection to being next door to a fish store. After they found the location for the store in a former salon, it took another nine weeks to renovate.

The store only sells Ocean Wise products. Spearheaded by the Vancouver Aquarium, Ocean Wise is dedicated to the promotion of sustainable seafood throughout Canada. Businesses affiliated with the program are not expected to provide 100% Ocean Wise products right off the bat, but are expected to work towards that goal over time – the recommended rate being the removal of one non-compliant product every six months until as much of the menu as is feasible meets with the standard. It should be noted that while the Daily Catch is the first business to meet the 100% compliance goal, the Bamfield Marine Science Centre has done the same for its students since 2009.

Thus, McColloch and Johnson’s intent is not to provide the cheapest fish one can find, but responsibly harvested seafood that was not caught using methods that harm the marine environment. Cheapness, they say, they will leave up to Superstore and other big businesses. They do take pride in providing an excellent (yet still-affordable) product, and knowing where that product came from and how it came to be in their store.
