San Diego, CA – Catalina Offshore Products, one of California’s premier seafood purveyors and San Diego’s only exporter of sea urchins, is pleased to announce its Full Partner status with Seafood for the Future, the Aquarium of the Pacific‘s nonprofit seafood advisory program in Long Beach.
Catalina Offshore Products is among 11 restaurant and retail businesses to date that have partnered with Seafood for the Future, whose mission is to encourage healthy and responsible seafood choices. As a result, Catalina Offshore Products is part of a network of businesses committed to sourcing better seafood choices from responsible fisheries or farms.
“Seafood for the Future welcomes the opportunity to work with Catalina Offshore Products to further their efforts to source responsibly,” said Seafood for the Future Program Manager Kim Thompson. “By signing up as a Full Partner, they have committed to transparency and accountability, enabling Seafood for the Future to make recommendations based on the most up-to-date science and fisheries data so their customers can make choices that are conducive to healthy oceans and communities.”
As a primary supplier of West Coast fresh fish and shellfish, Catalina Offshore Products mainly features species found along the California coast and the Baja peninsula. Nearly 75 percent of the seafood Catalina Offshore Products sells online, wholesale and in its San Diego-based retail market is sustainable and much of it is sushi grade fish.
“We are thrilled to be working with Seafood for the Future,” said Catalina Offshore Products CEO Dave Rudie. “We appreciate that they look beyond generalizations in order to provide well-researched seafood recommendations. For example, we seek out individual sources that are doing things responsibly. Where other seafood advisory lists categorize certain species as do-not-eat, we know that in our region those stocks are well-managed and incredibly robust.”
Catalina Offshore Products’ partner page on Seafood for the Future’s website features a partial list of Seafood for the Future-approved seafood products. The list will be updated as additional inventory is assessed. To maintain its partnership with Seafood for the Future, Catalina Offshore Products’ product offerings will be evaluated quarterly to ensure the most up-to-date recommendations. Seafood for the Future also requires copies of the most recent invoices at the time of evaluation to improve transparency and accountability.
