Boat Captain Says Red Tide May Be A Good Sign For Stone Crab Season

ANNA MARIA ISLAND, FL – Between the snowbirds making their way to Florida, and stone crabs making their way into the kitchen, the Anna Maria Oyster Bar is getting ready for a boom in business.

"That's what you're here in Florida for," said John.

A 2018 Mote Marine Laboratory study found stone crabs can't tolerate high levels of red tide. The tested crabs died or became stressed while in red-tide contaminated waters. 

Some locals are worried the red tide may bring down the number of healthy stone crabs in the water, leading to a major price hike at restaurants. But at least one boat captain doesn't think that will be the case.
