BRUNSWICK – When temperatures plunged below freezing for nearly two weeks last month, the cold killed an unknown but potentially significant number of shrimp and spotted sea trout in Georgia waters, state biologists said.
Over the next two weeks, Georgia Department of Natural Resources scientists will be working to determine whether the shrimp harvest, which typically begins in June, and trout fishing, which is a year-round sport, will be affected by the die-off.
“Any time you have a freeze that cold for a prolonged period, there is reason to be concerned about mortality and its impact on the population,” said Doug Haymans, DNR Coastal Resources Division constituent services supervisor.
