In an ongoing dispute over who gets covered with a Marine Stewardship Council certificate for Alaska salmon, the Alaska Salmon Processors Association on June 26 reportedly withdrew from the binding arbitration process.

MSC officials said June 30 that the organization is continuing to encourage ASPA and the group of processors wishing to join the certificate for Alaska salmon "to reach a timely and equitable agreement on certificate sharing. The MSC believes that continued dialogue offers the best route to resolve the issue," said MSC's Melissa Mefford, in an email from the organization's Seattle office.

"These are commercial negotiations and remain between ASPA and the applicant organizations" she said "As a standard setter, MSC cannot directly engage in commercial negotiations but remains hopeful that the parties will continue to dialogue to find a solution."
