Fishermen and processors have their eyes and hopes set on Aug. 22, the date state officials have set for the opening of Louisiana’s white shrimp season. Biologists have predicted plump, larger shrimp.
The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission voted Thursday to set the opening date, commencing at 6 a.m., on recommendations of biologists, who have been sampling the waters, and public comments from people working the fishery.
The season will run until some time around Christmas; a closing date has not been set.
About 26.5 million pounds of shrimp were caught in Louisiana from January 2011 through June 2011.
