Winn-Dixie is known for its cheery slogan, "Getting better all the time." But things seem to be heading in the opposite direction lately for the Jacksonville-based grocer with store closings, job cuts and lower sales.
By mid-September, Winn-Dixie will close 30 stores throughout the Southeastern U.S., mostly in Florida. It will also eliminate 120 corporate and field positions in addition to the about 1,950 jobs lost in the closing supermarkets.
"The future's not so great," said Scott Mushkin, a retail analyst for Jefferies & Co.
While Winn-Dixie has a strong management team that has helped it stay afloat, Mushkin said, mistakes from the past have left the chain floundering, unable to find a niche for itself in an increasingly competitive industry.
