Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has set its sights on Northbrook, where it plans to build a 151,000-square-foot supercenter on a lot owned by billionaire Michael Krasny.
The Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer, which operates 155 stores in Illinois, is scheduled to present preliminary plans for the property at 1000 Skokie Blvd. to village trustees Tuesday night. Under the proposal, Wal-Mart would buy the 13-acre parcel, part of an 18-acre tract that a venture controlled by Mr. Krasny has owned for nearly a decade.
“As responsible owners of the property for the past 10 years, we have explored all possible real estate development opportunities, including shopping centers, hotels, fitness clubs, residential and office parks,” Mr. Krasny, founder and former CEO of Vernon Hills-based CDW Corp., said in an email. “At every step along the way we have consistently relied on the village of Northbrook's staff and elected officials to guide us in our efforts to (ensure) our work was consistent with the best interests of the entire village.”
