Vons vs. Jons: An Eternal Los Angeles Grocery Store Debate

In its nearly 50-year history, one has become a lifeline for homesick Californians


It’s no secret that Los Angeles has all manner of grocery stores, from warehouse-style behemoths to well-stocked neighborhood markets. Jons Fresh Marketplace falls somewhere in between the two: It’s both a full-service grocery store with everyday essentials and a purveyor of specialty items that reflect the demographics of each of its 13 locations in Southern California, spanning from Orange County to the San Fernando Valley.

Lots of folks in Los Angeles, though, know the brand for its … familiar longtime logo.

The chain’s origin story involves another well-known LA grocery store: The late founder, who immigrated to LA from Armenia, purchased a defunct Vons grocery store near Downtown LA in 1977.
