In the past five years, the Southeast and North Carolina in particular have grown the food hub movement, setting an example for the rest of the country.

This is according to Doug O’Brien, the U.S. Department of Agriculture deputy under secretary of rural development, who attended the National Good Food Network in Raleigh at the end of March.

According to the Wallace Center, a regional food hub is a business or organization that actively manages the aggregation, distribution and marketing of source-identified food products primarily from local and regional producers to satisfy wholesale, retail and institutional demand. There are 17 food hubs in North Carolina, such as Durham's Bella Bean Organics, which recently began distributing across state lines.
